Several major wildfires devastated Southern California, including the Palisades and Eaton fires. At least 29 people died and more than 100,000 have been displaced. The fires burned about 40,000 acres and destroyed more than 14,300 structures. Entire communities have been destroyed, with downed power lines, possible gas line issues, debris, and toxic ash lingering for months. Clean up and rebuilding will be a long-term effort.

Fund Distributions

$320,000 distributed to date

The LA County Wildfires Fund is providing food, water, medicine, medical supplies, hygiene kits, masks, firefighting equipment, cleaning materials, financial assistance, housing support, and emergency grant funding to vetted organizations on the ground that are providing vital help to those who need it most. The Town of Palm Beach United Way will continue to identify additional partners on the ground to support the needs of LA residents.

Americares is focused on meeting the health needs in communities devastated by the California wildfire crisis. Teams are actively delivering medicine, masks, safe drinking water, and relief supplies for wildfire survivors throughout southern California. The agency is also prepared to provide emergency funding and deploy medical staff and disaster mental health specialists as needed.

Americares immediately contacted more than 70 partners throughout the region, including 24 health organizations in Los Angeles that serve low-income, uninsured patients, and deployed an emergency response team to Los Angeles to deliver aid and coordinate shipments. Partner clinics and local organizations are requesting N95 masks and respiratory and chronic disease medications – critical for people who fled their homes without the medicine they need to maintain their health.

“We are meeting immediate health needs and will continue to help people access health services in the weeks and months to come,” says Americares U.S. Director of Emergency Response Mariel Fonteyn. “The scale of this disaster is immense, and we will provide local health organizations with the resources they need to protect the health of survivors.”

Global Empowerment Mission is working around the clock to pack Family Necessity Kits and other basic needs for families impacted by the recent fires. Supplies such as food, water, hygiene items, cleaning products, and other goods are being distributed throughout LA County daily.

In collaboration with BStrong, GEM is also distributing cash assistance cards to evacuated residents. These cash cards are distributed to assist with urgent needs, such as gas, food, children’s supplies, clothing, and/or whatever else is needed most at that moment. The GEM team is visiting various locations throughout the area including shelters, evacuation points, and distribution sites to deliver cards.

GEM and BStrong are working closely with displaced individuals and families to provide short-term housing support during this time. Many of those who have lost everything are now being further affected by being unable to work their trades jobs due to loss of their tools. GEM supports tradespeople through this initiative by providing those who have lost their tools with all new equipment in order for them to resume their work and receive income.

Longer term infrastructure is already in place to support the Los Angeles community indefinitely. GEM has already established a warehouse space in LA County to properly respond to the aftermath of these fires.

Harbor House has assisted dozens of families with financial aid as a result of lost wages due to the wildfires. The agency initially distributed assistance to help with loss of power, internet service, and cell phone service. They are currently helping relocate families who lost homes, including paying for rent. They are also covering motel stays for families who were evacuated or who lost homes/housing.

The LAFD Foundation is actively seeking funds to equip LAFD members battling wildfires with equipment and supplies such as:

  • EMERGENCY FIRE SHELTERS –These light, compact personal fire shelters are designed to reflect radiant heat, protect against convective heat, and trap breathable air within.
  • HYDRATION BACKPACKS - Firefighters can be on the front lines of a wildfire for up to 12 hours with these unique backpacks that carry three quarts of water.
  • WILDLAND BRUSH TOOLS –These light and durable hand tools are specially designed to help ground crews cut through tree limbs, clear brush overgrowth, and remove potential fuel sources.

The LAFD Foundation has also used funds to purchase steel mesh safety goggles, face protector mask hot shields, brush bags, EZ-ups, generators, tech equipment, and LED headlamps.
