Editorial: Toy drive generosity ends year with positive sign

On Christmas Day, many of us showered our children and grandchildren with dazzling toys, snazzy electronics and the latest software.

Every year, we show our love with those gifts, celebrate family and bask in the magic of the holiday.

But somewhere in Palm Beach County, not far from the affluent island that is Palm Beach, some children see few if any gifts under the tree, if there is one. Perhaps they receive carefully wrapped basic needs, like a new shirt — but little joy.

The Town of Palm Beach United Way’s 31st annual holiday toy drive aimed to address that, and again this year, it was a sparkling success. Residents, community groups and businesses collected thousands of toys and $20,745 in donations for at-risk children and families throughout the county. That’s up from the $19,000 in toys and donations collected last year.
